On Midsummer’s Day, 1986 newly restored GWR ‘City’ Class No. 3440 ‘CITY OF TRURO’ stands at Highley station, on the Severn Valley Railway, with a train from Bridgnorth to Bewdley. Designed by William Dean, the Great Western ‘City’ Class locomotives first appeared in 1903. ‘City of Truro’, the subject of the painting, was built in 1903 and is reputed to be the first locomotive in the world to reach a speed of over 100 m.p.h.

As with all Gibsons jigsaws, the beautifully illustrated pieces are made from the highest quality 100% recycled board and are therefore a pleasure to work with again and again.

Artist Profile

Barry Freeman

Barry Freeman was born in Northampton in 1937. Following ten years in the Royal Navy and several years in the electronics and aviation industry, he took up teaching, drawing and painting before early retirement gave him the opportunity to become a professional artist. An avid railway enthusiast since childhood, his combined love of art and railways is reflected in the detailed paintings in which he now specialises. In 1995, Barry was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is a former deputy president of the Guild of Railway Artists.
